What’s not to love about an extended weekend basking in glorious sunshine, feasting on truffle oil orzo, sharing cold golden beers and road tripping along Grecian coastlines with old friends and a couple of huskies. Hooked within a few hours, the city has us planning the big move across the Mediterranean to join Pete and start remote studios and artist retreats.
Athenian streets are lined with citrus trees, fallen orbs of orange and yellow dotting the gutters. It’s hills are topped with impossibly ancient ruins and it’s alleyways are home to a trillion street cats, all of whom are kept well fed by stocky Greek women, presumably those filling the void of long departed sons and daughters. Combine all of that with smiling locals, complimentary desserts with every meal and 15 hours of sunshine everyday, and you have yourself 4 very happy Australian Londoners.
We had 4 days in the capital venturing out to all the hot spots - the Acropolis, Plaka and the archaeological museum - from Pete’s beautiful apartment across the national gardens in Pagkrati. Pete also had a car, which had recently had its plates confiscated after a parking misdemeanour. I guess the parking police could never have known they were up against a group of people quite handy with the adobe suite and font finding. I won’t go into it, just in case the greek authorities ever find their way onto this blog, but our makeshift plates served their purpose as we hit the road along the coast bound for Corinth.
The ancient centre of Corinth was closed for the bank holiday, so we ended up venturing to the top of a hill overlooking the ruins. This hill was capped with an ancient looking fortress and splattered with wild flowers of a million varieties. This moment is perhaps my fondest memory of a city as old as time.
Our little holiday finished as it begun; sharing delicious food and scoping out potential love matched for Kin.
ευχαριστώ Pete, you legend.
